Itinerary

Day 1 – Medora, ND – The NEW Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library – Pitchfork Fondue Dinner – Medora Musical

Arrive this afternoon in Medora, ND. This authentic Old West cow-town was founded in 1883 by the Marquis de Mores and named for his wife. Medora offers a musical extravaganza, trail rides, mountain biking, hiking, museums, many gift shops and restaurants during the summer season. Enjoy an overnight stay at a local hotel.

First stop is the NEW Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library that is focused on the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. Theodore Roosevelt was the author of his own life’s adventure. He created a new chapter for America, one vast enough to match his vision for the country’s place on the world stage. The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is not a traditional museum. It’s an immersive journey into Roosevelt’s life and legacy—and an invitation to consider your own role in the arena.

This evening enjoy a Pitchfork Fondue Dinner. Every evening, chefs load steaks onto pitchforks and fondue them western style. Savor your steak as you overlook the picturesque Badlands from atop a bluff at the Tjaden Terrace.

Your steak comes with fresh fruit, salad, coleslaw, vegetables, baked beans, garlic toast, baked potatoes, brownies, cinnamon-sugar donuts, lemonade and coffee. If you want a beer or a glass of wine with your steak, we have you covered at the Tjaden Terrace Bar!

Then you have reserved tickets for the Medora Musical. Set in the outdoor splendor of the rugged North Dakota Badlands, this professionally produced, high energy, western-style musical show is proudly dedicated to the legacy of America’s 26^th President, Theodore Roosevelt, and the time he spent here in the Badlands of the Dakota Territory. Day 2 – Theodore Roosevelt National Park South & North Units – Long X Trading Post Visitors Center – Watford City, ND

After breakfast, a step on guide joins us for a tour of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park – The South Unit. Named for the 26^th President, it memorializes his contribution to conservation. The North Dakota Badlands provide a scenic backdrop to this park. The loop drive provides a view of buffalo, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, wild horses, mule deer and prairie dog towns. The park can be entered through Medora and is home to Teddy Roosevelt’s first ranching cabin, the Maltese Cross Ranch. He stated several times, “I never would have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota.”

Enjoy lunch on own in Medora then drive north to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park – The North Unit located near Watford City. The Park offers majestic Badlands scenery, abundant wildlife and potential for all kinds of adventure. The Scenic Byway is a 13-mile loop with spectacular views of the Badlands, Oxbow Overlook, prairie dog towns and the CCC shelter at the River Bend Overlook.

Arriving in Watford City, you stop at the Long X Trading Post Visitors Center, which showcases the ranching and trail driving lifestyle of the 1880’s. The Long X Trail was named for the Long X Ranch, which was the end of the trail for the cattle drives from Texas that ended in the area.

The Long X Visitor Center features North Dakota’s largest fossil. The petrified back cypress tree stump, weighing approximately 25,000 pounds and measuring approximately 6 feet in diameter and 8’ tall, was discovered in the Badlands south of Watford City during an archaeological dig in 2001.

Dinner is included tonight at the Outlaws Bar & Grill. An exquisite dining experience, Outlaws Bar & Grill will tantalize you with the gourmet flavor of the west during your dining experience. Check into your Watford City hotel for the night. (B,D)

Day 3 – Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center – Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park – Bismarck, ND

Travel to Washburn this morning to visit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, overlooking the Missouri River Valley near the Native villages where the Corps of Discovery spent the winter of 1804–05. The center explores the expedition and the region’s history as a crossroads for the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples, traders, trappers, and explorers. Permanent galleries highlight life on the Plains, while rotating exhibits feature art and history.

Next, travel south to Bismarck, ND where you will have lunch on own.

Continue to Mandan, ND where you visit Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and experience life at the Fort in 1875 at the Custer House. Tour the home of the General and Mrs. George Custer. Walk across the parade grounds to the barracks of the 7th Cavalry, the Commissary Store and visit the horses at the stables. The hills at Fort Abraham Lincoln provide a great view of the Missouri River Valley with the blockhouses standing guard over both fort and an ancient Mandan Village. The park’s Visitor Center houses the nation’s best display of Mandan artifacts and history along with items of interest on Lewis & Clark and General Custer.

Returning to Bismarck, check into your hotel for a two-night stay.  Tonight, enjoy a dinner cruise on the Lewis & Clark Riverboat. Cruise down the fabulous Missouri River and enjoy a delicious meal. (B,D)

Day 4 – Bismarck Guided Tour – North Dakota State Capitol – Heritage Center & State Museum

The morning starts with a guided tour of Bismark.  Bismarck was established when the Northern Pacific Railway reached the east bank of the Missouri River in 1873. Today, Bismarck is the center of government in North Dakota.

Next, you will visit the North Dakota Capitol, the house of government of the state of North Dakota. The capitol building is a 21-story Art Deco tower and is the tallest habitable building in the state. It is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Riders Hall of Fame. Honorees include entertainer Lawrence Welk, author Louis L’Amour, and Harold Schafer, founder of the Medora Foundation.

After lunch on own, visit the newly expanded North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum that offers exhibits which encompass the geology, archaeology, culture, traditions, and peoples encountered during the Corps of Discovery Expedition. North Dakota’s largest museum features four new museum galleries tracing the state’s rich history from its earliest geologic formation 600 million years ago to the present day. Exhibits in the Early People’s Gallery inform visitors about the fur trade, cultures and sites of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara peoples, Sakakawea, river transportation methods, bison, and more.

This evening enjoy a wonderful dinner at one of Bismarck’s great restaurants. (B,D)
