Itinerary
Day 1 – St. John’s, Newfoundland
Today, you arrive in St. John’s where a motorcoach will be waiting to transfer your group to your hotel for a four-night stay. This is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador , and is known for its vibrant culture, historic architecture and coastal scenery.
The evening features a Welcome Reception and the chance to learn more about the trip ahead. Dinner is on your own this evening.
Day 2 – St John’s City Tour – Cape Spear National Historic Park – Free Time Downtown – Dinner on George Street
This morning, meet your local guide for a tour historic St. John’s, one of the oldest cities in North America. A significant part of its identity is its history with the sea, from a long history in cod fishing to its role in the first transatlantic wireless signal received by Guglielmo Marconi. You will visit Cabot Tower and Signal Hill and see the harbour’s “Narrows.” Then admire the architecture of old St. John’s, including the famous ‘Jelly Bean Houses’ and the bustling village of Quidi Vidi.
Also included today is a visit to Cape Spear National Historic Park, the most easterly point of land in North America. After some free time in the downtown area, travel north of St. John’s to the Admiral’s Coast. These uniquely named fishing villages nestled into the rugged cliff sides are made for photography.
Dinner tonight is included on George Street, a street with nothing other than pubs and bars. Enjoy some local pub fare as well as some Newfoundland music and entertainment. (B,D)
Day 3 – Avalon Peninsula – Colony of Avalon Archaeology Site – Bay Bulls Puffins
After breakfast, you travel to the Avalon Peninsula, where Newfoundland and North America begin. this, where the rising sun shines first. You travel to the Southern Shore, along a beautiful, winding coastline known as the Irish Loop. It is dotted with small ‘outport’ communities for which Newfoundland is so famous. You will visit the Colony of Avalon Archaeology Site, where the remains of an early 17th century settlement are well preserved.
The enjoy lunch (included) in Ferryland. This afternoon, travel to the community of Bay Bulls where you should see thousands of Atlantic Puffins, Murres and other seabirds as well as many Humpback, Minke, and Fin Whales. Tonight, you enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in Bay Bulls. Return to St. John’s for the evening. (B,D)
Day 4 – Conception Bay
Today, explore “around the Bay” along the picturesque coastline of Conception Bay, the home of pirates of centuries ago. Lunch will be included today at a local restaurant. There will be time for stops along the way for picture taking and to visit some of the more interesting villages such as Holyrood and Brigus, one of the historic sailing ports of Conception Bay and home of the late, famous Captain Bob Bartlett who took Perry to the North Pole.
Return to St John’s for the night. Dinner is on your own this evening. (B,L)
Day 5 – Isthmus of Avalon – The Burin Boot – Burin & St. Lawrence – Marystown
After breakfast, cross the Isthmus of Avalon to explore the Burin Peninsula. One of the many out-croppings of land on the eastern half of the island is “The Burin Boot” with its sandy beaches, welcoming locals and historic fishing towns. While on tour you will enjoy an included lunch in the picturesque town of Swift Current.
This afternoon, visit Burin and St. Lawrence where we learn about the heroic efforts of the local community to save the seamen aboard the doomed vessels The Pollux and Truxton. End the day in Marystown, the hub of this peninsula and your home for the night. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)
Day 6 – Grand Bank – St. Pierre – Island Tour – Free Afternoon
This morning your tour travels to Grand Bank a town famous for its namesake schooners and its prolific fishing heritage. After lunch in the town of Fortune, you then catch the ferry to the French Islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.
Saint Pierre and Miquelon are a French archipelago due south of Newfoundland. Sparsely populated Miquelon-Langlade island contains the Grand Barachois lagoon, home to seabirds and seals. The busier Saint Pierre island has a distinct French atmosphere, with a cathedral and the Musée Heritage, which celebrates regional history. An island nearby, Île-aux-Marins, features an abandoned fishing village. This collection of islands is not part of the province, they are not even Canada! Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is the last piece of French territory in North America.
St. Pierre with a population of 6,500, the infrastructure is modern and urban. The residents are a combination of rotating French employees and those who have lived on the island for many generations. Their traditions are completely European with an interesting mixture of French and Basque culture and history.
On arrival in St. Pierre, meet a local guide for a tour of the island. Following the tour, enjoy free time exploring the island on your own.
Check into your St. Pierre hotel for two-night stay. Tonight, enjoy true French cuisine at one of St. Pierre’s finest restaurants. (B,L,D)
Day 7 – Isle aux Marins or Free Time
Today features options to suit the interests of the group. Some may choose to take a half-day tour to Isle aux Marins (Sailor’s Island). This is a small island situated in the mouth of the harbour from Saint-Pierre. It was at one time a fishing village of 600 souls, which made it larger than St. Pierre.
Or you may choose to take a free morning in St. Pierre to visit the sites and museums or to ‘twack’ around in the shops that feature many imports from France and other parts of Europe. (Twack is a Newfoundland slang term for window shopping)
Either way, lunch and dinner are included today. (B,L,D)
Day 8 – St. John’s – Free Afternoon & Evening
After breakfast, catch the ferry back to Fortune, Newfoundland. Lunch is included today. Then returning to St. John’s, check into your hotel for a two-night stay. The remainder of the day is yours to explore St. John’s on your own. Dinner is also on your own this evening. (B,L,D)
Day 9 – Free Day in St John’s
Today is a free day in St. John’s. You have the option to visit “The Rooms”, the provincial art gallery, museum and archives, the Johnson Geo Centre which is a facility that declares itself to be the “Earth’s Geological Showcase”, the Ecclesiastical District, or simply ‘Twack around’ the shops. A farewell dinner will be included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 10 – Depart for Home
All good things must come to an end and so you bid a fond farewell to France and Canada’s newest yet oldest province. Your group will be transferred to the airport for your return flight home. (B)
