Itinerary
Day 1 – Friday, April 23 – Richmond, VA – Historic St. John’s Church – Give Me Liberty Speech Reenactment – White House of the Confederacy – Virginia Beach, VA – Virginia Beach Boardwalk
Arrive today in Richmond, VA where witness the democratic process at work through an animated reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention. It was at this meeting that Patrick Henry shouted, “Give me liberty or give me death!” The re-enactment is by professional actors, in historic attire. You will hear Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty” with comment from Richard Henry Lee, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
Following the reenactment, take a guided tour of historic St. John’s Church, one of America’s most important historic sites, where – swayed by Patrick Henry’s powerful argument – the delegates made a decision that changed the course of history, lighting the spark of the War for Independence. Hear the story of the revolutionary 1775 Liberty or Death speech inside the place where it happened.
The afternoon includes a tour of the White House of the Confederacy. Built in 1818, this National Historic Landmark served as the Confederate Executive Mansion during the war. Enjoy a guided tour of the restored house–the elegant public rooms as well as the private living quarters–explore the lives of the people who lived and worked there.
Depart for Virginia Beach, VA where you enjoy a three-night stay at an oceanfront hotel. The evening is yours to explore the famous boardwalk, local shops and attractions, dine on own at one of the many oceanfront restaurants. Relax and unwind with the soothing sounds of the Atlantic Ocean as you lounge on the beach.
Day 2 – Saturday, April 24 – Parade of Nations – Norfolk NATO Festival – Free Time on Boardwalk – Tattoo Hullabaloo – Virginia International Tattoo
After breakfast, head to Norfolk, VA, where you will have reserved seats for the Parade of Nations. This annual event is the only parade in the U.S. to honor NATO and features over 100 parade units including the U.S. and international bands, military units, community groups and floats representing every NATO Member Nation!
Following the parade, enjoy free time and lunch on your own at the Norfolk NATO Festival. Immerse yourself in the spirit of global friendship and maritime tradition at the vibrant Norfolk NATO Festival, a cherished springtime celebration in Norfolk. Set against the scenic waterfront, the festival brings together the rich cultures of NATO member nations through lively performances, international music, and colorful displays that create an atmosphere both festive and welcoming. As you stroll through the event, you’ll encounter cultural exhibits, artisan vendors, and engaging demonstrations that highlight traditions from around the world, offering a unique opportunity to experience a global showcase in one charming coastal setting.
Enjoy lunch on your own in Norfolk’s dynamic downtown district, where a variety of dining options await just steps from the festivities. Whether you prefer a relaxed waterfront café, a cozy bistro, or a classic seafood spot, you’ll have the freedom to select the perfect setting to suit your taste. Take this time to unwind, people-watch, and savor the coastal ambiance before continuing your exploration of this spirited and culturally rich festival.
This afternoon, return to the hotel for free time to explore the Boardwalk or rest before the evening events. Dinner will be on your own this evening.
Following dinner on your own, return to Norfolk, VA for a visit to the Tattoo’s Hullabaloo, a vibrant, outdoor festival held in conjunction with the Virginia International Tattoo. Taking place on Scope Plaza, this event begins three hours before each Tattoo performance and offers attendees a lively atmosphere filled with music, dance, and cultural exhibitions. Enjoy live performances by pipers, drummers, and dancers, as well as drill routines and international drumming showcases.
Then experience the world-renowned Virginia International Tattoo from premium seats. This spectacular event showcases military bands, drill teams, dancers, and choirs from around the globe. See an incredible international cast of more than 800 performers, with bands from the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps joined by civilian and military performers from seven nations. A salute to international friendship and an emotional call to the love of country in us all, the Tattoo is an unmissable celebration. (B)
Day 3 – Sunday, April 25 – Free Time for Beach & Boardwalk – Military Aviation Museum
Breakfast is included at the hotel this morning, but the morning is yours to do as you wish. Explore Virginia Beach at your own pace, stroll along the lively Virginia Beach Boardwalk, lined with shops, restaurants, and local attractions. Browse for souvenirs, savor fresh coastal flavors at a café, or simply sit back and watch the waves roll in from a bench overlooking the ocean. Whether you choose to shop, dine, or simply relax by the beach, this is your time to do as much —or as little—as you like. Lunch will be on your own today.
This afternoon, visit the Military Aviation Museum home to one of the world’s largest collections of flying vintage military aircraft. The purpose-built airport facility includes over 50 aircraft from the World War I and World War II era. The museum is also home to historical structures located on 130 acres. With static displays, and regular flying demonstrations featuring some of history’s most iconic aircraft, the Museum is a ‘must see’ attraction!
End the day with dinner at Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant (or similar). (B,D)
Day 4 – Monday, April 26 – Depart for Home
